New America has fired Barry Lynn for his criticism of Google and no liberal think tank is lining up behind single payer. Both actions are indicative of a failure of our policy support institutions driven by the fact that they rely on private money. In this piece, I provide alternative ways to create policy support institutions that do not run into these problems. The solutions include public subsidies for parties to run their own think tanks without relying on private money and funding government commissions to create policy solutions on an ad-hoc basis.
