Bruenig criticizes work glorification on three grounds. First, if it brings dignity, then what of the one-half of Americans who do no work each year and the two-thirds who do less than full time work? Also what about disabled people who are incapable of work? Second, research shows people prefer working to being unemployed on average, but prefer being unemployed to having a bad job. Third, social attitudes about work are not fixed and have changed a lot over time, suggesting that it is not as core to human well-being as some seem to think.
